The Creative Trade
About a year ago I was innocently reading my latest copy of Frankie and came across a nifty little article called "TRADE YOU FOR IT". This article followed the likes of Lentil & Matt Purbrick aka Grown & Gathered and Stanislava Pinchuk aka Miso (if you've been on Pinterest for more than a minute, you've probably seen her tattoo designs). The article interviewed these guys on what they trade, why they trade and how it has fundamentally effected their craft. As I poured over ever word, I began to feel conflicted with my new plans to go into business with my creative work...realistically we don't live in a world where I can trade my services for all our life necessities, like RENT! The question lingered in my furrowed brow, how can I bring the idea of 'trade' into what I do?
Fast forward a year or so and I am completely thrilled to be presenting my second successful creative trade! Young designer Kate Baxter contacted me about my flat lay designs and when I saw her adorable illustrations I jumped at the opportunity for a trade. So I commissioned her to illustrate our "honest jones" mantra, in trade for some of my flat lay images for her design/illustration work. And honestly, there is just something rather life giving about making a trade.
